What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer, and How Do You Hire One?
Updated: Oct 15
AI products are moving from demos into real customer systems. Someone has to make them work inside each customer's data, tools and workflows. That person is the forward deployed engineer. Demand for the role has grown fast, and few people have done it before. This guide explains what the role is and how to hire for it.
What a forward deployed engineer does
A forward deployed engineer works with customers to get a product running in their environment. They write production code, connect the product to customer systems and fix problems on site or on calls. They then feed what they learn back to the product team.
The role started at data and defence software companies. AI companies now use it to deploy models, agents and data pipelines for enterprise customers.
How the role differs from similar roles
Software engineer: builds the core product. Works mostly with the internal team.
Solutions engineer: supports sales with demos and technical answers. Writes little production code.
Forward deployed engineer: writes production code for one customer at a time. Owns the outcome after the sale.
Skills to look for
Strong coding in Python or TypeScript, with production experience.
Data skills: SQL, APIs, data pipelines and integration work.
Hands-on work with LLMs, agents or ML models in production.
Clear communication with non-technical customers.
Comfort with ambiguity, travel and changing priorities.
The hard part is the mix. Many engineers code well but avoid customers. Many customer-facing people do not write production code. You need both in one person.
Where to find candidates
Few people hold the title today, so a job ad alone rarely works. Look at people who have done the work under other titles:
Engineers at consultancies who build data and AI systems for clients.
Software engineers at B2B startups who handled enterprise integrations.
Solutions or sales engineers who also shipped production code.
Founders of small technical startups.
Most of these people are not job hunting. You reach them through direct approaches, not ads.
How to run the interview
A coding exercise based on a real integration problem, not a puzzle.
A customer role play. The candidate explains a technical issue to a non-technical stakeholder.
A debrief on a past deployment. Ask what broke, what they changed and what they told the customer.
A conversation about travel, hours and on-call expectations, so both sides know the job.
